The idea isn't new. For example, Alteon has a developers kit for
Tigon based cards to program its firmware.

I would take it as no objection and no strong support.
It's my impression that the merge should be based on consensus of the
developers, and the core intervenes only when a conflict cannot be
solved among the developers.
So, the next step would be to post a patch for -current and ask for
opinions from other developers.
